I am the Humanitarian Specialist for my church calling, and I've already had some great opportunities to do some service in our community. This week was a highlight though, working with the "Congregations For Kids - Good Start Back To School Drive." This organization collects school supplies from 30 congregations in the area and puts them into backpacks for needy kids in our school district. I organized the drive for our ward, collected the items and then participated every day this week filling the backpacks. It was so fun!
This year we put together 1,550 backpacks for kids from Kindergarten through 12th grade! It was so fulfilling to collect the requested school supplies, plan which backpack would fit which age group and gender, and fill them with the items. It was exhausting for me being pregnant, but I took it slow. :) I met some wonderful people who do such great things in our community. I hope I can participate in it next year too!
This week I helped out with a creative drama class for 3-5 year olds at the theater. That age is just the cutest!! They say the funniest things. I think having a 4 year old around the house for the rest of my life wouldn't be so bad. :) Quite entertaining.
Yesterday we went to a Fidelity picnic/family softball game for the 4 branches in the area. It was fun to meet some of the people Jeff has talked about and put names to faces. Naturally, he wanted to play softball with the guys. We got to the park, and realized he had forgotten his tennis shoes and baseball glove on the kitchen table! We debated going back home to get it, but he decided to borrow a glove and play barefoot. (***Note to anyone: never play barefoot....ever. It's worth the drive home to get shoes!***) Halfway through the game, he made an amazing catch in the outfield...while also colliding into another player and hitting his big toe pretty hard. At least he caught the ball. :) He was in pain, and it swelled throughout the day so we went to an urgent care center to get x-ray's. Turns out it's not broken (although I'm shocked by how bruised and swollen it's turned out to be!) and the bone got bruised bad. So he's hobbling around now. Never play barefoot is the lesson to learn from this experience. :)
Jeff has been studying furiously for his series 66 license. As part of his new job role, he has to get certified in some financial laws and information. He takes the test tomorrow. As you can see from this picture I took of him Friday, he has been studying really hard. :) That's not the only time I've caught him sleeping while studying....rules and regulations are boring stuff! Let's hope he passes, so he can be done studying!
Here's my view these days looking down at the floor:
This is the closest I'll get to a maternity photo shoot. Ha. I'm 35 weeks and hanging in there! I think "hanging in there" is a good phrase for how I feel right now...I don't want to complain about the natural discomforts of late pregnancy, and "hanging in there" just seems like a more positive way to respond when people ask how I'm feeling. I'm done with my theater camps, so I've got one month to get my stuff in order and prepared for this little babe's arrival! Now if only my body will keep hanging in there for everything that needs to be done!
