Spontaneous Trip!

Jeff and I decided to take a spontaneous trip this week. I am someone who likes to plan...so this trip goes against my nature. :) But it was fun and relaxing. Jeff is off work, so I got work off on Thursday and Friday and we decided to head to San Antonio and see the sights...including the famous Alamo!

We woke up Thursday morning, packed and started to leave when I noticed we weren't wearing green! Ack! So we had to change of course...you have to wear green on St. Paddy's day! :) We went to the store and got some road-trip food and headed out....here's Jeff eating beef jerky 3 minutes in to the car ride. :)

I am an avid collector of tourist pamphlets and had plenty of information that I looked at while we drove the 5 hours to get there. We picked out some fun things to do while in San Antonio. We booked a cheap hotel the night before....
We stayed at the Rest Inn....AKA---Trucker's motel. :) Jeff and I cracked up when we pulled into the parking lot! Just staying at this hotel was an adventure! But we made the best of it, remembered the money we saved, and tried not to think about the truckers that used our shower before us. Ha.

After putting our things in the hotel, we went down to San Antonio. It was packed with Spring break vacationers. We decided to skip the tourist items and get something to eat. We used Jeff's I-phone app called "yelp" to find a good, local place. We ate at some yummy local restaurants this trip!

We then went back downtown and walked around. We saw the Alamo. It was much smaller than I pictured it, but interesting to learn about.

We walked all over the famous Riverwalk. It was fun...it was St. Patrick's day so people were out having a great time at the restaurants along the path. It was a fun nightlife atmosphere. It kinda reminded me of Venice with the waterways and shopping. If I lived there I'd go walk on the Riverwalk all the time...it was pretty!

The next day we went and saw the San Antonio temple. It was so pretty up on a hill. It has beautiful stained glass windows...love it! I am trying to take better, artsy pictures with my camera:

We went to the Witte Museum which was interesting. I love museums! We then went back to the Alamo and walked through it. We walked some more around the city, ate and were exhausted by 6pm. Tourism is tiring!

To continue our spontaneous trip we woke up the next day and decided to go to Austin (the capital of Texas) We went to the Capital building. We didn't know we were going to get involved in a hippie rally! I'm not exactly sure what they were rallying about but I did hear them say "9/11 was an inside job....by the US government!" geez. We hit hippie groups coming into the city and another rally as we left. It seems like Austin is the place to go if you have a loud opinion to share and are wearing grunge clothes. Needless to say, Jeff and I didn't fit in with that crowd. :)

The capital building was gorgeous...made out of pink texas granite. We got a tour inside and it was really interesting!

Here are the House & Senate rooms....lots of famous portraits of heroes and symbolism in the decorations. It was interesting! They still have "In God We Trust" inscribed in the front of the room.

The 300 foot dome. Breathtaking.

What a fun trip! It was great to see some more of Texas and learn about Texas history. We should take spontaneous trips more often! :)
