Here's the story....
Here's the before:
And here's the after:
It was a week before my due date. I was really uncomfortable all month long, and was glad to come one week early! I woke up at 3:15am with strong contractions and water leaking. I quickly called my mom to come be with Brielle so we could go to the hospital. (It takes an hour & 15 minutes to get to my place in good traffic) I timed my contractions with Jeff and realized they were coming 2 minutes apart and were hurting a lot. We talked about calling a member in the ward to come over and stay with B, but soon realized I needed to get to the hospital fast. I'm so glad I didn't wait. I felt so much better being in the care of nurses and the contractions were coming faster and stronger as we drove.
We checked into the hospital at 4:30am. I'm sure we looked interesting with little Brielle in her pjs, and me panting through contractions going into Labor & Delivery. But the nurses took it in stride. The only problem was Jeff had to hold Brielle and take care of her instead of helping me through the strong contractions.
I was dilated to a 6, and the nurse thought I'd have the baby quick. She mentioned I might not get an epidural in time, and I freaked out (in my mind). She could see I really wanted it and decided to try. Just like when I was in labor with Brielle, they had a hard time getting my IV in to start the fluids. They finally got it on the third try, and I got an epidural soon afterwards.
I was comfortable after that, but very nauseous and did not feel well. They realized that the baby was facing the wrong direction (sunny-side up) and that slowed down my labor, and more pain. (This is the same thing that happened with Brielle too!) I was very well taken care of, but my labor was no piece of cake. Because originally they thought I'd have the baby really quick, my epidural ran out. I was in pain for a long time, then got a "booster" but that ran out too by the time I was ready to push. So I feel that in some ways I experienced part of natural childbirth. Luckily, I only had to push for a short time, didn't tear, and she turned at the end on her own. But boy was I wanting that epidural! This has always been my greatest fear. Anyone who knows me knows that if I can handle labor, anyone can. :) It was very painful, and I don't want to describe any more details of the rest of the labor because I never liked hearing the bad stuff before I was pregnant. So to put your mind at ease, although it was painful, I would do it all over again to bring a baby into the world. And it truly is amazing how quickly you forget the pain. It is a miracle and it's still surreal that a little life is created and born through me.

The girls!
My parents kept Brielle and we came home from the hospital on Tuesday evening.
We named her Rosalyn Kathryn Tolsma
How did we choose the name? Again, I had a million names we liked and we couldn't decide before the birth. After she was born, Jeff and I narrowed the list and Rosalyn just felt right. At the risk of sounding poetic, she came out with rosy pink skin and cute rosebud lips. The name means "little rose" and it just seemed to fit her. It just felt right, and still does. We call her "Roz" often, but haven't settled on a nickname just yet. We used Kathryn as the middle name after my fabulous mother. I am thrilled that she is named after this amazing woman and hope she will be as wonderful as she is.
Now she is a month old. She is a very sweet, mild baby so far. The nurses described her as "gentle" and that's a great way to describe her.
Welcome to the world, our little rosebud!
