Ever since the mine collapsed in Chile in August, I've been following the story of the 33 trapped miners. People might not know this, but I've been reading all sorts of information about the situation, and would almost check daily on their status. I could not be more excited about the rescue mission, and want to stay up all night to see it happen!
If you haven't heard about this story, here is a brief synopsis:
33 miners in Chile were trapped below ground...7 football fields below ground to put it in perspective. They were discovered over 2 weeks later and told that they would not be able to be rescued till December. There was just no way to get all of them out. Since then they have had a small "pipe" where rescuers have sent down food and water and other necessities. They even had a projector with the soccer game on it sent down to entertain them. :) Volunteers above the surface worked day and night to figure out a way to get them home safely. They finally decided upon drilling a tube down to them, and creating a capsule that would hold one person that could be lowered down into the mine and then lifted up again. Nasa helped to create this capsule and shipped it to Chile. I have been watching these past 68 days as all of the pieces to the rescue have fallen into place. I am just overjoyed that the day has finally come where these miners are getting rescued!

I can't even imagine being stuck down there for so long and what these men and their families have been through. It has been an inspirational story of hope for those in the mine, as well as those witnessing this incredible situation. The volunteers, the plans, the inventions and modern technology have made this one of the most incredible stories I have ever followed. I hope that it will have a happy ending and that all 33 miners will be reunited with their families.
